Will controllers work with higher voltage than the operating maximum?

The short answer is NO.

The longer answer is still NO. Always read the datasheet of the controller you are using. The maximum operating voltage is specified there.

  • The maximum operating voltage is different for each controller. Please read the datasheet.
  • The HWID always encodes maximum ranges for both current and voltage, not the nominal values.
  • If you exceed the absolute maximum voltage, a damage can happen. The warranty does not cover such a case.
  • siliXcon will not help to exceed the maximum operating voltage.

The longest answer is still NO, but why?​

You may ask if the specified range is 100V, why can't you use a 100V battery? Every power stage needs certain margin in the voltage rating to maintain robust and stable operation. There are multiple mechanisms causing dynamic fluctuations on the DC side. For exp. just during the switching, the voltage can overshoot by about 10-15V or more. Therefore, if you use a 100V battery, the transistors can see 120V, which is above their maximum rating.
